As the food cooks slowly beneath the soil\, you’ll have time to reflect\, relax\, and soak up the rhythms of the woodland kitchen. \nTo add a dash of campcraft to the day\, you will be set a challenge to design and build your own adjustable pot hanger for campfire cooking. Using natural materials and applying safe knife skills\, you’ll craft a sturdy and functional tool for hanging pots and kettles over the fire\, developing both your whittling confidence and your understanding of practical woodland skills. \nAs the day draws to a close\, we will gather around the campfire to enjoy a celebratory feast\, bringing together all the food prepared throughout the day. From here we will take a short walk out into the woods to learn how to view the natural world through the eyes of our ancestors. \nHaving each been issued with your own knife to use for the weekend\, we will then look at the wealth of natural materials available to us and then put these materials to the test with a practical session of shelter building as your tutor guides you through the skills required to build two styles of simple but effective shelter using all natural materials from the woodland itself. \nNext we will gather around our new woodland homes to practise further safe cutting techniques with our knives which can be used for a range of practical applications. You will also be shown how to use a folding saw effectively\, avoiding the pitfalls that come with poor technique. Next it’s time to get to grips with the axe as you are introduced to a variety of types; which axe for which task\, how to split wood safely and with minimal effort and basic carving techniques. Throughout this session you will learn how to make smart decisions about which living materials we should harvest and which we should consider passing by. \nYour first afternoon will be spent focused on firelighting skills. You will gain skills using tried & tested techniques. Choose from; firesteel\, solar fire\, chemical\, electrical or traditional flint & steel to produce embers and flames of quality. Then we will be exploring the woods on the hunt for natural tinders\, kindling and firewood\, including how find them even in wet conditions. \nNext you will unlock the secrets of fire by friction by learning to use the bow drill\, an ancient form of firelighting. We guarantee you will have success using this iconic technique. Your tinder and firewood will be put to good use as you learn how to use these to build your own campfire. Finally you will be be shown how to minimise your trace and lessen your impact on the land when bushcrafting. \nOn the Saturday evening we come together as a group to prepare freshly cooked campfire meal in our traditional dutch oven. You’ll enjoy good food and good company around the campfire as humans have done for thousands of generations. Then you have the option to join us for either a natural navigation session by starlight (weather dependent) or a night-time tree ID walk\, an exercise which will really hone your senses. \nDay two will introduce further key skills as well as build on the foundations you already have. You will discover how to source\, filter and purify water from natural sources. Learn how to make water safe to drink. We will then turn our attention to making natural cordage from woodland plants and trees. Having made your cordage\, you will then be testing its strengths and applications by rigging tarp shelters with what you’ve crafted. \nYour final afternoon will aim to bring all your new skills together with a range of challenges designed to put into practise all you have learned. Using your sharp tools\, you will create campcraft devices to make outdoor life easy and you will go through the whole process of creating your own campfire using natural tinders and fire by friction to boil your own woodland brew – which\, we assure you\, will taste very satisfying indeed. \nOn the Friday and Saturday nights you can choose to sleep out in your own built woodland shelter or tree hammock and wake up in the woods. It’s going to be a weekend you won’t forget. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”14451″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”14452″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nThis course costs £170 per person and is aimed to adult learners aged 16 years and over. Children as young as 12 have attended in the past\, and there is no charge for them as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. Be aware though that the course is taught at an adult level. There is the option to sleep out in one of our natural shelters in the woods\, on both Friday and Saturday nights at no extra charge. Or you can bring your own hammock or tarp system to setup under the trees here. Hammocks (with covering bug net and tarp) are available to hire from us at an additional £20 for the weekend. SUMMARY:Primitive Skills: Weaving & Trap Making
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”innerpage-rowgraphic”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””] \nShape Roots\, Bark & Branch the Stone Age Way\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”inner-pagetitle”] \nStep into the world of our ancestors and discover the ancient skills of weaving\, fibre preparation\, and crafting functional traps from natural materials. This hands-on one-day course explores some of the earliest technologies developed by hunter-gatherer cultures\, skills that allowed people to gather food\, carry resources\, store goods\, and live in harmony with the natural world. \nSet within the historically rich landscape of Park In The Past\, this course introduces you to the techniques used to create fish and crab traps suitable for both inland and coastal environments. Guided by primitive skills instructor Billy Souter\, you’ll explore traditional basketry methods\, experiment with natural fibres\, and craft your own woven creation using skills as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. \nIdeal for both beginners and returning bushcraft practitioners\, this course offers an opportunity to reconnect with the landscape through slow\, mindful craft. You’ll develop confidence in using simple tools\, working with plant roots and bark\, and understanding how material selection shapes the form and function of traditional woven traps and containers. \nBilly shares his thoughts on this enduring craft: \n“Weaving is one of the oldest and most universal skills. Whether you’re crafting a trap\, a container\, or a carrying system\, you’re working directly with nature’s materials\, feeling how they bend\, twist\, and respond. Preparing fibres and weaving them into something useful links us with the daily life of our ancestors in a deeply satisfying way. These are humble skills\, but full of ingenuity and beauty.” \nBy the end of the day\, you’ll leave with your own woven fish or crab trap and the confidence to continue exploring fibre crafts\, basketry\, and primitive weaving techniques in your own time. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nDiscover how our ancestors created traps\, containers\, and storage systems using natural fibres and simple tools.\nLearn how to identify and select the right materials; spruce roots\, flexible shoots\, plant fibres\, & bark strips.\nPrepare natural fibres for weaving\, including root splitting\, soaking\, and plant processing techniques.\nDevelop core weaving\, shaping\, and lashing skills used in traditional basketry and trap building.\nUnderstand environmental considerations and effective techniques for setting traps in inland and coastal waters.\nPractise carving and knife skills essential for trap construction and fibre preparation.\nExperience primitive cooking techniques as the group prepares and shares fresh fish cooked over the campfire.\nDeepen your understanding of the cultural and historical significance of woven crafts.\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″] [vc_column_text] \nEvent details\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”white-text”]Date: Sun 5th July 2026 \nTime: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm \nVenue: Park In The Past \nCost: £70[/vc_column_text]Book now [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”32942″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”row-graphic-white” css=”.vc_custom_1573054760131{background-image: url(https://woodlandclassroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/background-texture.jpg?id=12328) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nYour Tutor: Billy Souter\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]”My passion for Bushcraft came to life in my mid teens and quickly led me venturing down the path of primitive living skills.” \n“Having found my passion and decided I wanted to expand my knowledge and pass these skills on to others. After gathering around the morning fire\, Billy will introduce the ancestral origins of weaving and trap making\, explaining how these essential skills supported food gathering\, transport\, and daily life for countless generations. \nYou’ll learn how to identify and gather suitable weaving resources from the landscape\, from spruce roots and tree bark to flexible shoots and plant fibres. Billy will demonstrate traditional fibre preparation; splitting\, soaking\, softening\, and trimming\, before guiding you through shaping the wooden frame of your trap or container. \nWith your materials ready\, you’ll begin learning basic weaving and lashing techniques\, practising the patterns and tension needed to form a strong\, functional structure. Carving and knife-handling will be introduced where needed as you shape elements of your trap. \nThe afternoon deepens into craft and community. You’ll weave the body of your fish or crab trap\, creating the narrowing entrance and final structure while learning how design influences effectiveness. Along the way\, Billy will share advice on responsible and ethical trapping\, as well as traditional methods for placement\, anchoring\, and checking traps. \nAs the craftwork progresses\, the scent of woodsmoke will signal a shared meal prepared the primitive way. Together\, you’ll gather around the fire to cook fresh fish using ancient techniques; roasting on embers\, steaming in leaves or cooking with our hot smoker\, experiencing firsthand how our ancestors nourished themselves from land and water. This simple meal\, shared outdoors\, brings the day’s skills into a meaningful and communal context. \nAfter food\, you’ll return to your weaving to complete your trap or container\, with time to refine your work and explore alternative designs. Examples of traditional and modern primitive crafts will be available for inspiration throughout the day. \nBy the end of your time in the woods\, you’ll head home with your own woven trap\, improved knife and fibre-working skills\, and a deeper connection to the resourcefulness of our ancestors—and to the land that continues to provide for us today. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”32943″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nThis course costs £70 per person and is open to adult learners aged 16 years and over. With your perception opened\, you’ll start to notice subtle disturbances in leaf litter\, faint trails through grass and the small but meaningful details that reveal animal presence. \nAs you explore the site\, Pete will guide you through comparing prints from different species\, showing how the shape and structure of an animal’s foot is adapted to its lifestyle. With known badger\, fox and otter activity on site\, there is a strong chance of encountering fresh sign to examine and interpret. \nYou’ll also be introduced to the unmistakable sign of beavers\, including the characteristically gnawed tree stumps along the water’s edge. Bird sign will also be explored\, including feathers\, feeding traces\, tracks\, droppings and pellets\, subtle clues that help reveal the presence and behaviour of the many species that move through the woodland canopy and glades. \nThroughout the day you’ll encounter a variety of animal sign: scat\, hair caught on branches\, feeding traces\, scent marking\, trails and more. If nature chooses not to offer every example\, Pete brings a rich reference collection including feathers\, skulls\, cast prints and scat samples\, ensuring key features can be studied up close. \nLater\, you’ll practise recording your finds using photography\, sketching and plaster casting. These skills not only help you build confidence but create a personal record you can refer back to as you continue tracking on your own. \nBy the end of your woodland immersion\, you’ll walk away with heightened awareness\, a new depth of understanding of your surroundings and the thrilling realisation that the landscape is alive with stories waiting to be read. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”32974″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nThis course costs £65 per person and is aimed at adult learners aged 16 years and over.
