School visits which bring the past to life for Key Stage 2 History.

Step into the ancient past, to the world of Vikings and Saxons. Children will come face to face with Jarl Beorn, who along with his wife Lagertha, will guide children to discover how to live like a Viking. Our passion for history, ancient technology and bushcraft deliver experiential learning for schools which is fun, educational and unforgettable.

Vikings in the Curriculum

The National Curriculum in England for Key Stage 2 states that, “pupils should be taught about the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor.” So, if you need to have Viking history lessons in your school, you might as well do it in style. Curriculum topics include:

  • Viking raids and invasions
  • Resistance by Alfred the Great and Athelstan, first King of England
  • Further Viking invasions and Danegeld
  • Anglo-Saxon laws and justice
  • Edward the Confessor and his death in 1066

We Make History “Wild!”

It’s amazing how many more children become engaged when learning outdoors rather than in the classroom. Our outdoor Vikings sessions are unique because they bring the Forest School teaching approach of ‘learning through play’ to the subject of history.

Interactive games, teamwork and role-play, cater to different learning styles whilst the costumes, encampment and campfire bring the sights and smells of the past to life through an authentic living history display, all set under the open sky. Children’s imaginations will go wild.

Our Vikings sessions are interwoven with nature education too. If you think about it, it’s only natural. The people of the past were inseparable from the landscape they lived in, and so we integrate our Vikings sessions with topics like farming, herblore, woodcraft, tracking, foraging, plant identification and traditional crafts which link your local history with the countryside around you.

“Powysland Museum had the great pleasure of James’ brilliant company twice this summer as part of the museum’s Viking exhibition and related activities. First he came as part of a Viking invasion outside the museum demonstrating Viking warrior skills and wood crafts to school children, visitors to the museum and passers-by. Later in the summer he was demonstrating leather crafts for children and their families as part of the museum’s holiday activities. On both occasions James was absolutely fantastic – he can communicate with all ages and on all levels and he makes history come alive. “James and Lea provided Celtic re-enactment as part of a school visit to a hillfort. The children were obviously enthralled. In the afternoon about 30 adults visited their camp and were as impressed. We wholeheartedly believe that learning outdoors, surrounded by nature is an effective way to nurture these characteristics in our young people. We also believe it’s more powerful for a child to find an answer for themselves than for us to give it to them right away. So, we always encourage the children’s curiosity and allow plenty of opportunities for kids to ask lots of questions and explore the different possible answers. This approach of mentoring young people fosters enquiring, bright minds. Whilst the natural settings we teach in and the themes we cover work toward building their mental and emotional well-being by developing confidence, resilience and empathy.

The hour workshop you delivered where you encouraged us to take off our shoes to ground ourselves, and take time to see and appreciate things in their natural environment has had a huge impact on my personal wellbeing. I left the session feeling calmer and more relaxed than I had in a long time. In the weeks that followed, I began to take off my shoes and walk slowly across the grass before and after school, and felt that it was enabling me to start the day in a better way.

The strategies you shared reminded me very much of my own childhood and the upbringing that I was fortunate enough to have. It reinforced how crucial these experiences are to share with the children we teach.

I am very much looking forward to developing outdoor learning experiences this year, and would like to thank you and James for the time you spent, and the many strategies and ideas you shared.
