Survival School

Decipher your map, find water, build your shelter, make fire, survive the wild!

Imagine having to survive in the deep forest with only your wits and what you have in your pockets to get you out of there. That’s the challenge we set for kids who join us for Survival School. Lucky for them they are not alone and our expert Bushcraft Leaders have also landed in the woods to help your kids along their adventure. Our first challenge… find the hidden stash of supplies!

Children will have to navigate their way through the woods, pick the perfect site for their basecamp, discover which plants and trees could help them survive and learn to use sharp tools to craft useful items. There will also be our bushtucker challenge (optional for kids) where we’ll be tasting all sorts of weird and wonderful snacks, from salty seaweed to edible insects! If your kids have enjoyed our Wildcraft Adventure™ and want to take their bushcraft skills to the next level, then this is the event for them.

Skills you will learn

We’ll be taking kids through all the essential skills for survival. Once they’re all set up in the woods they can relax by their campfire and cook up some tasty treats. They can also get to try their hand at the ancient art of fire by friction! They’ll learn skills from our ancestors that will come in handy next time they find themselves dropped on a desert island… or more likely on their next family camping trip.

Campfire Cooking

All activities are based around our Forest School shelter and surrounding woods. Children will make new friends and learn new skills whilst enjoying a fantastic day out in nature, all led by experienced activity leaders.

Unlike our Wildcraft and Forest School play days, our Survival School events are aimed at the slightly higher age bracket of 8-14 year olds due to the level of skills required by kids throughout the day. But we have had younger and older children come along. So, if you feel that your child would be suited to the day, then do get in touch with us and we can decide together if this event is a good fit for your child.

Survival School usually runs from 10am – 4pm and the game is usually played in groups of between 12 and 16 kids. Children get into teams of 4 or 5 and work together to build their camps and learn as many bushcraft skills as possible. We also allow plenty of scope in the day for those kids that want to play freely in the woods between activities – we know they love it.

Survival School

Please be aware that Survival School includes several bushcraft activities including; splitting wood with a small axe, fire-lighting, den building, campfire cooking and whittling. Our staff are trained and experienced at tutoring children through such skills and will cater each activity to suit the child’s age and experience as appropriate. Your child’s safety is our primary concern.

Parents don’t usually stay with their children during our Survival School events. If your child has additional needs that you feel would require a parent or guardian to stay with them for the day though, we would advise getting in touch with us in advance of making a booking and we’ll see what we can arrange. We aim to be as inclusive as we can.

We can also run this programme as a private group booking and it also makes a very popular outdoor Bushcraft Birthday Party.

We had a really lovely few hours today and learnt such a lot in a very short space of time. Elliott was so pleased he lit his cotton wool with his flint and Orla keeps talking about the death triangle, Good skills as well as good fun in a beautiful setting. Highly recommended.
