DESCRIPTION:[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”innerpage-rowgraphic”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”inner-pagetitle”] \nNATURE I.D. MADE SIMPLE – FOR EVERYONE\n\nHave you ever paused on a walk and wondered\, “What tree is this?” Or spotted a curious flower\, unusual leaf\, or animal track and wished you had someone there to tell you more?\n\nWalking with Trees are free guided walks through beautiful woodland and parkland. Usually taking place on the second Tuesday of the month\, we visit a different country park or venue around the Wrexham area to discover beautiful wild places. This month’s walk starts from the Felin Puleston Outdoor Centre on the edge of the National Trust’s Erddig estate. We will explore the footpath network on the hunt for trees young and old. When you book your place we will send you full details of where we are meeting.\n\nEach month we’ll take our time exploring not just the trees\, but all the wild wonders that catch our eye along the way. From wildflowers and edible plants to signs of wildlife and the changing seasons\, we’ll follow our curiosity and see where nature leads us.\n\nWhether you’re brand new to the natural world or already have a budding interest\, this is a relaxed\, welcoming way to learn more and connect with the landscape around you.\n\nLed by James “The Tree Guy” Kendall\, woodsman and outdoor educator\, you’ll gain simple\, practical skills for identifying what you see and deepen your appreciation of the hidden lives of plants\, animals\, and trees alike.\n\n\nThese events are completely FREE to attend\, but places are limited\, so booking is essential. Book your place by emailing hey@woodlandclassroom.com or clicking on the link on this page.\n\nCome and walk with us\, and discover just how much nature has to share when we slow down and look a little closer. Join James & Lea\, your foraging guides\, as we explore the world of edible plants\, berries and fungi. “Food tastes better outdoors” is a common phrase but it tastes even better when you have gathered and prepared it yourself. \nThe secret world of edible wild plants will be opened up to you as we search for mushrooms\, roots\, berries & nuts at this plentiful time of year. To the forager\, our woodlands and hedgerows are full of tasty and filling wild food opportunities. \nThis one day course looks at some of the best and tastiest ways to enjoy wild food. From our basecamp we will be exploring the forest and hedges in search of “food for free.” \nSet at the head of the Vale of Clwyd\, Coed Talwrn is a privately owned woodland reserve rarely open to the public. This rich and varied landscape weaves together mixed woodland\, flowing waterways\, open meadow and scrubland\, creating a space that feels both wild and deeply cared for. \nFor over a decade the land has been gently managed using rewilding techniques\, allowing nature to lead the way. I have been involved in the outdoors since becoming a guide at the age of 5 (its a long story\, I will tell you about it when we meet) and working my way through the Peak Park Ranger Service and Mountain Rescue. \nI love my office window now. Bushcraft and wilderness skills are my passion and combining them with a canoe trip makes it even better! \nIt’s not just about learning skills\, it’s about clearing your head and maybe taking a different approach. Far too often we are forced to put our heads down and get the job done. Sometimes you need to stop and take stock. The woodland environment is the perfect place to do this. If you can do this\, learn a new skill or two and have fun you will notice the benefits!” \n[/vc_column_text]Find Out More[/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”31088″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” el_class=”wd-circle-image”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1573143170656{background-color: #6c7d4d !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nSkills you will learn\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”cream-text”] \nOver the course of the programme you will learn a range of skills\, including… \n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nBird Language [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nAnimal Identification [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nTree & Plant identification [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nAncestral Skills [/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nNature Connection [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nTrack & Sign [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nMindfulness [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nReading the Landscape [/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nYour Day in the Woods\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nYour day begins with simple awareness practices\, helping you slow down\, sharpen your senses and attune to the woodland around you. With your perception opened\, you’ll start to notice subtle disturbances in leaf litter\, faint trails through grass and the small but meaningful details that reveal animal presence. \nAs you explore the site\, Pete will guide you through comparing prints from different species\, showing how the shape and structure of an animal’s foot is adapted to its lifestyle. With known badger\, fox and otter activity on site\, there is a strong chance of encountering fresh sign to examine and interpret. \nYou’ll also be introduced to the unmistakable sign of beavers\, including the characteristically gnawed tree stumps along the water’s edge. Bird sign will also be explored\, including feathers\, feeding traces\, tracks\, droppings and pellets\, subtle clues that help reveal the presence and behaviour of the many species that move through the woodland canopy and glades. \nThroughout the day you’ll encounter a variety of animal sign: scat\, hair caught on branches\, feeding traces\, scent marking\, trails and more. If nature chooses not to offer every example\, Pete brings a rich reference collection including feathers\, skulls\, cast prints and scat samples\, ensuring key features can be studied up close. \nLater\, you’ll practise recording your finds using photography\, sketching and plaster casting. These skills not only help you build confidence but create a personal record you can refer back to as you continue tracking on your own. \nBy the end of your woodland immersion\, you’ll walk away with heightened awareness\, a new depth of understanding of your surroundings and the thrilling realisation that the landscape is alive with stories waiting to be read. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”32974″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nThis course costs £65 per person and is aimed at adult learners aged 16 years and over. I’ve seen this happen with learners of all ages and it’s a testament to the power of the space you create as an educator. where learners can be themselves and thrive. SUMMARY:Wild Game Preparation & Outdoor Cookery
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”innerpage-rowgraphic”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text el_class=”inner-pagetitle”] \nGet Hands On Experience of Skinning\, Gutting\, Plucking\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nYou’ll get up close with fur\, feather and fin as we cover deer\, pigeon and fish. The day will be very much hands on and the course will culminate in you enjoying a freshly cooked game casserole which celebrates the wild animals of the day. \nOn this course we will take you through the process of identifying if your game is fit for consumption\, how to prepare each animal for cooking and use some of the cuts to create simple but hearty campfire meals. We will also discuss the history and uses of the various non meat parts of the animal and talk about the processes our ancestors would have employed to make as much use of the animal as possible. \nThis one day course will give you a solid grounding in using wild game in your cooking\, all against the backdrop of the mixed woodland at Park in the Past. \nYour special guest tutor for this course is bushcraft instructor Pete Morton of Red Oaks Bushcraft. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n\nDiscover the seasons for game; what can be hunted\, when and by whom\nLearn the benefits of eating game for your health and for pest control\nGet confident in knowing whether your game is fit for consumption\nEnsure your game is stored and prepared hygienically outdoors \nBuild knife skills with skinning and gutting\nPrepare a range of game ready for cooking\nUse traditional dutch ovens\, pans and willow frames for cooking\nCreate a delicious game casserole over the campfire\nEnjoy a range of wild game freshly prepared by you and the tutor at basecamp\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nWood Pigeon: learn about the bird\, how to identify it\, what it eats\, internal organs specific to most birds\, specifics to look out for with birds that have been shot. You will then have a demo of preparing the bird\, first with a knife then without tools before having a turn for yourself. The meat will then be made ready for flash frying with elderberry balsamic vinegar and served in bread rolls with selected greens for your lunch. \nFish: discover how to gut fish with a knife\, how to fillet a fish using just your fingers. Craft and set up a ponassing rig using living willow withies to cook your fish over the fire. \nDeer: learn about the different animals\, their history\, what is gralloching? Then we will work on the skinning and prepare the skin for tanning while some of the group start on the jointing. You will look at selected prime cuts of meat and debone as much as possible\, the bones will be kept for use on other courses (using as much of the animal as possible). \nPlease note; due to the nature of game being wild animals and not farmed we cannot guarantee all the above will be available but if not a suitable substitute will be provided. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″] [vc_column_text] \nEvent details\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”white-text”]Date: Sat 21st Nov 2026 \nTime: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm \nVenue: Park in the Past \nCost: £85[/vc_column_text]Book now [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”31114″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”row-graphic-white” css=”.vc_custom_1573054760131{background-image: url(https://woodlandclassroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/background-texture.jpg?id=12328) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nYour Tutor: Pete Morton\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n“In 2006 I quit my IT job and set off in a new direction\, to establish Red Oaks Bushcraft with my wife Nichola\, based in the Peak District. He is also a member of the Learning Through Landscapes Accredited Network of trainers. \n“I believe strongly that outdoor education has a large role to play in the future of how we teach our children. We’ve been learning in nature for thousands of years\, well before we were put in classrooms. In the woods ‘challenging’ behaviour becomes regulated\, usually disengaged learners are inspired and inquisitive minds are fostered. I’ve seen this happen with learners of all ages and it’s a testament to the power of the space you create as an educator. where learners can be themselves and thrive. My approach to teaching is with an emphasis on steering my students toward fostering a deeper connection with nature through understanding the landscape around us.”[/vc_column_text]Find Out More[/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”30642″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” el_class=”wd-circle-image”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1573143170656{background-color: #6c7d4d !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nSkills you will learn\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”cream-text”] \nOver the course of the programme you will learn a range of skills\, including… \n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nFirelighting [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nTarp Shelters [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nKnives & Whittling [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nTracks & Signs [/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nCampfire Cooking [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nKnotwork & Lashings [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nTree & Plant identification [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nOutdoor Activity Ideas [/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nInvertebrate ID [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nSafe Tool Use [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nConservation Skills [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nOutdoor Session Planning [/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”31558″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nThe total cost per person is £560.00.
