We’ve been learning in nature for thousands of years\, well before we were put in classrooms. In the woods ‘challenging’ behaviour becomes regulated\, usually disengaged learners are inspired and inquisitive minds are fostered. I’ve seen this happen with learners of all ages and it’s a testament to the power of the space you create as an educator. where learners can be themselves and thrive. My approach to teaching is with an emphasis on steering my students toward fostering a deeper connection with nature through understanding the landscape around us.”[/vc_column_text]Find Out More[/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”30642″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” el_class=”wd-circle-image”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1573143170656{background-color: #6c7d4d !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nSkills you will learn\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”cream-text”] \nOver the course of the programme you will learn a range of skills\, including… \n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nFirelighting [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nTarp Shelters [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nKnives & Whittling [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nTracks & Signs [/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nCampfire Cooking [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nKnotwork & Lashings [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nTree & Plant identification [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nOutdoor Activity Ideas [/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nInvertebrate ID [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nSafe Tool Use [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nConservation Skills [/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″]\n\n	\nOutdoor Session Planning [/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”31558″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nThe total cost per person is £560.00. SUMMARY:Primitive Skills: Flint Knapping & Bone Working
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”innerpage-rowgraphic”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nOur One Day Stone Age Skills Experience\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”inner-pagetitle”]Step into the world of our Stone Age ancestors and discover two of humanity’s oldest and most ingenious crafts: shaping sharp-edged tools from stone and transforming raw bone into functional\, beautiful objects. This immersive one-day course invites you to explore how early people created the essential tools that allowed them to hunt\, build\, prepare food\, sew\, carve\, and thrive in a world without metal or modern equipment. \nSet within the atmospheric landscape of Park In The Past\, home to the UK’s only full-size reconstructed Roman fort\, you’ll learn how our ancestors read the land\, selected materials\, and used skill\, patience\, and technique to shape flint and bone into tools that were vital for survival. Perfect for both newcomers to bushcraft and those already on the journey\, this course reconnects you with the raw creativity and resourcefulness embodied by ancient craftspeople. \nUnder the expert guidance of primitive skills instructor Billy Souter\, you will learn to knap your own flint tool and craft an item from bone using traditional stone-edged tools. In the process\, you’ll gain insight into humanity’s earliest technologies and the mindset that shaped them. \nBilly shares his perspective on these ancient crafts: \n“Stone and bone were the foundation of our ancestors’ toolkit. Flint knapping gave them the cutting edges they relied on daily\, while bone working allowed them to create items that were both functional and beautiful. There is something deeply grounding about taking these raw materials and transforming them with your own hands. These skills connect us mentally and spiritually to our past\, allowing us to understand the challenges\, ingenuity\, and resilience of those who walked this land long before us.” \nBy the end of the day\, you’ll leave with your own hand-crafted flint tool\, such as a flint-tipped drill or arrowhead and a bone item\, such as a pendant\, shaped using traditional methods\, along with the knowledge to continue developing these skills at home.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nLearn flint knapping fundamentals; including material selection\, platform preparation\, & safe technique.\nCraft a flint drill\, scraper\, or arrowhead using the skills you’ve developed.\nWork bone using stone-edged tools\, shaping it into a practical or decorative item.\nUnderstand the properties of flint and bone and how to use each material effectively.\nExperience the process of using hot rocks to boil water\, the Stone Age way.\nIdentify tree and plant species that support bushcraft and toolmaking\nDeepen your connection to nature through hands-on ancestral skills and mindful craftwork.\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″] [vc_column_text] \nEvent details\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”white-text”]Date: Sat 28th March 2026 \nTime: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm \nVenue: Park In The Past \nCost: £70[/vc_column_text]Book now [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”32902″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”row-graphic-white” css=”.vc_custom_1573054760131{background-image: url(https://woodlandclassroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/background-texture.jpg?id=12328) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nYour Tutor: Billy Souter\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]”My passion for Bushcraft came to life in my mid teens and quickly led me venturing down the path of primitive living skills.” \n“Having found my passion and decided I wanted to expand my knowledge and pass these skills on to others. As the fire crackles and the canopy rustles overhead\, Billy will introduce you to the deep ancestral significance of stone and bone working. You’ll explore how these materials shaped early human culture\, technology\, and survival. \nYou’ll start by learning how to assess flint nodules\, prepare platforms\, and strike flakes using controlled percussion. Billy will demonstrate key techniques before guiding you through the process of shaping your own tool\, perhaps a flint drill\, scraper\, or arrowhead. As you work\, you’ll develop a feel for the material\, gaining an understanding of fracture patterns\, edge geometry\, and safe\, effective knapping practice. \nWith your flint tool taking shape\, the group will pause to experience another aspect of Stone Age life: heating rocks and using them to boil water\, a technique that predates pottery and reveals the remarkable ingenuity of our ancestors. \nUsing simple stone tools\, you’ll learn how to shape\, abrade\, and carve bone into a useful object such as a needle\, pendant\, or small tool. Billy will guide you through the properties of bone\, how to select suitable pieces\, and the traditional techniques used by hunter-gatherers across the world. \nBy the end of the experience\, you’ll head home with your own hand-crafted flint and bone items\, new practical skills\, and a deepened sense of connection to the land and the ingenuity of our ancestors. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”32903″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nThis course costs £70 per person and is open to adult learners aged 16 years and over. Trees must be thinned to grow well and invasive species like bramble have to be managed so that they don’t dominate other plants. \nSo what is coppicing? Well it’s is an ancient form of woodland management\, that involves repetitive felling of the same stump\, near to ground level\, and allowing the shoots to regrow from that main stump. Coppicing creates a variety of micro-habitats within a woodland which become homes for specialised wildlife such as dormice (above) and butterflies. \nCoppicing also produces loads of useful timber products that are still used today. Woodlands that have a reason to be managed\, perhaps for timber\, firewood\, access or green woodworking\, are more likely to receive care and attention long into their future\, and indeed those woodlands that we have today have survived precisely because they have had an economic value to the local community\, “the wood that pays is the wood that stays.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nThis course is aimed at adults aged 18 or over. SUMMARY:Identifying Trees in Winter
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”innerpage-rowgraphic”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”inner-pagetitle”] \nWhen you’re out walking\, have you ever wondered\, “which tree is that?” \nOnce the leaves have fallen from the trees\, many people can be stumped when asked what they’re seeing in the woods. But if we can understand the clues trees give us we can unlock their identity and so much more. On this one-day course\, we’ll show you how to identify trees in winter by looking at buds\, bark\, the shape of the tree and other clues. We’ll also look at the different uses that trees have\, their place in the ecosystem and dive into a bit of woodland folklore. You will also take away your very own field guide Winter Trees: A Photographic Guide to Common Trees & Shrubs published by the Field Studies Council. This excellent resource is perfect for continuing your learning and practising tree ID after the course is done. \nJoin James\, who will be your tutor for the day. He has worked for many years in and around trees from managing the largest Community Woodland in Wales (300 acres\, no less) to introducing children to the wonder of woods with his Forest School work. James has also introduced thousands of students to the subject of tree identification through his popular online programme The Complete Tree ID Course. \nAt lunchtime\, share a hot campfire brew together at the woodland fire circle\, sheltered under the canopy of native trees. You’l learn about the restorative woodland management that is happening here and how wildlife is returning to this special place. Your course will all be set against the beautiful backdrop of the mixed ancient woodland and parkland of the National Trust’s Chirk Castle estate with over 600 acres of nature to explore and veteran trees over 500 years old. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n\nGain confidence in identifying a range of common native & naturalised tree species\nIdentify trees when their leaves have fallen\nLearn to use buds\, twigs\, bark\, leaf litter and other winter signs\nDiscover medicinal and edible uses for trees\nUnderstand how trees grow and their value to wildlife\nReceive your own Winter Tree ID Guide\nGet access to a discounted place on The Complete Tree ID Course\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″] [vc_column_text] \nEvent details\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”white-text”]Date: Sat 10th Jan 2025 \nTime: 10:00 am – 3:30 pm \nVenue: Chirk Castle \nCost: £40[/vc_column_text]Book now [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”25177″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”row-graphic-white” css=”.vc_custom_1573054760131{background-image: url(https://woodlandclassroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/background-texture.jpg?id=12328) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”29986″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” el_class=”wd-circle-image”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nWinter Trees Guide Included!\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Everyone attending this course also gets a FREE field guide; British Trees: Winter Signs. The day will be very much hands on and the course will culminate in you enjoying a freshly cooked game casserole which celebrates the wild animals of the day. \nOn this course we will take you through the process of identifying if your game is fit for consumption\, how to prepare each animal for cooking and use some of the cuts to create simple but hearty campfire meals. We will also discuss the history and uses of the various non meat parts of the animal and talk about the processes our ancestors would have employed to make as much use of the animal as possible. \nThis one day course will give you a solid grounding in using wild game in your cooking\, all against the backdrop of the mixed woodland at Park in the Past. \nYour special guest tutor for this course is bushcraft instructor Pete Morton of Red Oaks Bushcraft. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n\nDiscover the seasons for game; what can be hunted\, when and by whom\nLearn the benefits of eating game for your health and for pest control\nGet confident in knowing whether your game is fit for consumption\nEnsure your game is stored and prepared hygienically outdoors \nBuild knife skills with skinning and gutting\nPrepare a range of game ready for cooking\nUse traditional dutch ovens\, pans and willow frames for cooking\nCreate a delicious game casserole over the campfire\nEnjoy a range of wild game freshly prepared by you and the tutor at basecamp\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nWood Pigeon: learn about the bird\, how to identify it\, what it eats\, internal organs specific to most birds\, specifics to look out for with birds that have been shot. You will then have a demo of preparing the bird\, first with a knife then without tools before having a turn for yourself. The meat will then be made ready for flash frying with elderberry balsamic vinegar and served in bread rolls with selected greens for your lunch. \nFish: discover how to gut fish with a knife\, how to fillet a fish using just your fingers. Craft and set up a ponassing rig using living willow withies to cook your fish over the fire. \nDeer: learn about the different animals\, their history\, what is gralloching? Then we will work on the skinning and prepare the skin for tanning while some of the group start on the jointing. You will look at selected prime cuts of meat and debone as much as possible\, the bones will be kept for use on other courses (using as much of the animal as possible). \nPlease note; due to the nature of game being wild animals and not farmed we cannot guarantee all the above will be available but if not a suitable substitute will be provided. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″] [vc_column_text] \nEvent details\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”white-text”]Date: Sat 22nd Nov 2025 \nTime: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm \nVenue: Park in the Past \nCost: £85[/vc_column_text]Book now [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”31114″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”row-graphic-white” css=”.vc_custom_1573054760131{background-image: url(https://woodlandclassroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/background-texture.jpg?id=12328) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nYour Tutor: Pete Morton\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n“In 2006 I quit my IT job and set off in a new direction\, to establish Red Oaks Bushcraft with my wife Nichola\, based in the Peak District. Bushcraft and wilderness skills are my passion and combining them with a canoe trip makes it even better! \nIt’s not just about learning skills\, it’s about clearing your head and maybe taking a different approach. SUMMARY:Family Bushcraft Adventure
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”innerpage-rowgraphic”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nHave a Really Wild Adventure\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”inner-pagetitle”] \nGive your family the gift of adventure with a whole day of real outdoor skills for parents and kids. This one-day experience is perfect for the family that wants to inject a little more ‘wild’ into their lives. Want to introduce your kids to the secrets of making fire\, building shelters and the joys of campfire cooking? Whether you’re planning a wilder family camping trip or simply want to gain confidence in wilderness-living skills then this is for you. \nShow me a child who doesn’t love the idea of building dens out in the woods\, lighting their own campfire and getting to grips with sharp tools. You will learn how to do these things effectively\, safely and responsibly\, whilst having a fun and rewarding day out in the woods together. \nWe’re told as children not to play with fire\, but if we discover it’s secrets and learn how to be safe when lighting fires outdoors then it can be our best friend. It warms us\, cooks our food\, lights our way and hypnotises us whilst campfire tales are told. We believe that kids should know not only know how to light fires\, but also learn to manage their risk and be responsible for their own safety and have an awareness of their impact on the environment. If children never get to “play” with fire then they’re missing out on a whole lot of what a real childhood should be about. \nTest your mettle in our axe throwing range and weave your own cordage using the plants around you. All these skills are presented in a fun and engaging way that will appeal to both adults and children. You’ll go away feeling confident and with the right tools to be able to have wilderness adventures of your own with your kids. Our goal is for all children to get the chance to develop a love of nature and the outdoors. \n“Such a great day\, we’re going to be headed out to Snowdonia later this summer for our own family adventure and this day has given us a load of ideas. The kids won’t stop talking about what they want to cook on the campfire :-)”Joanne Hall \nAll this will take place against the backdrop of mixed woodland at Bryntysilio Outdoor Centre\, just outside of the popular tourist town of Llangollen.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nCreate your perfect woodland getaway\, using tarps\, hammocks & natural materials\nDevelop sharp tool skills; safe techniques for knife\, axe & saw\nPlay fun games that introduce your kids to key bushcraft skills\nIdentify and gather a range of natural tinders & building materials\, right from the forest\nCraft & create with “woodland lego” to make useful camp gadgets\nThrow axes in our target range (height restrictions apply)\nChoose the best wild campsite; gain awareness of hazards to look out for\nLight fires that will stay lit and keep you toasty\nCook up a storm\, with tasty treats over the campfire\nMake your own string from nettles; craft a bracelet or necklace\nDare you take the “Rain-Proof Challenge” with your finished shelter?\nLeave no trace of your camp in the wilderness\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″] [vc_column_text] \nEvent details\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”white-text”]Date: Wed 6th August 2025 \nTime: 10am – 4pm \nVenue: Bryntysilio Outdoor Centre\, Llangollen \nCost: £85[/vc_column_text]Book now [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”31321″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”row-graphic-white” css=”.vc_custom_1573054760131{background-image: url(https://woodlandclassroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/background-texture.jpg?id=12328) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nYour Tutor: James Kendall\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]James is the Head Bushcraft Instructor at Woodland Classroom\, having worked in outdoor education & conservation for over 10 years. You’ll discover how each part of the fire plays a role in different methods of food preparation\, from fast frying to slow roasting. \nThroughout the morning\, you’ll get hands-on with a range of traditional cooking techniques. You’ll be guided through the ancient process of building and cooking with an earth oven\, using it to slow roast a joint of meat and seasonal vegetables to perfection. As the food cooks slowly beneath the soil\, you’ll have time to reflect\, relax\, and soak up the rhythms of the woodland kitchen. \nTo add a dash of campcraft to the day\, you will be set a challenge to design and build your own adjustable pot hanger for campfire cooking. Using natural materials and applying safe knife skills\, you’ll craft a sturdy and functional tool for hanging pots and kettles over the fire\, developing both your whittling confidence and your understanding of practical woodland skills. \nAs the day draws to a close\, we will gather around the campfire to enjoy a celebratory feast\, bringing together all the food prepared throughout the day. This is a moment to sit back\, relax\, and share stories\, laughter\, and good food in the glow of the fire\, celebrating the skills\, flavours\, and friendships forged in the woodland kitchen. \nThroughout the day\, your tutor will weave in stories\, traditions\, and practical tips for taking your outdoor cookery skills further\, whether you’re cooking for friends on a camping trip or preparing a feast in your own back garden. \nBy the end of the day\, you’ll leave with a belly full of delicious food\, the confidence to cook creatively over an open fire\, and the warmth of having shared a memorable day of food\, fire\, and friendship in the woods. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”32473″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nThis course costs £75 per person and is aimed at learners aged 16 years and over. Over a warming brew\, your tutor will introduce you to the world of green woodworking\, sharing the stories and traditions behind the tools and techniques you’ll be using. \nFrom here\, we step into the woods to carefully select a suitable tree for our projects. You’ll learn how to assess and choose the right species\, size\, and form\, before being guided through safe and respectful tree felling techniques using traditional hand tools. This is an opportunity to experience the full journey from tree to craft\, gaining valuable skills in safe woodland management and sustainable harvesting. \nOnce back at camp\, your focus will turn to safe and effective tool use. You’ll be introduced to the carving axe\, shave horse\, drawknife\, and carving knives—essential tools for transforming raw wood into useful items. You’ll learn a range of knife grips and axe techniques designed to give you confidence and control in your carving. \nThroughout the morning\, you will put these new skills into practice by cleaving wood and rough shaping your projects\, including crafting your own tent peg and twig spoon. You’ll also enjoy creating decorative gypsy flowers from hazel—a traditional woodland craft that takes a steady hand to create something naturally beautiful. \nAt lunchtime the campfire kettle will be on as we take time to relax\, chat\, and soak up the sights\, sounds\, and smells of the woodland workshop. Alongside this\, you’ll also get the chance to test your aim and skill in a fun and safe axe throwing session\, bringing an extra element of challenge and enjoyment to your day in the woods. \nIn the afternoon\, your attention turns to refining your skills — cleaving\, shaping\, smoothing – to create your own wooden spatula. As you work\, you’ll discover how these timeless crafts connect us to a slower\, more mindful way of living\, and leave with not only your own handmade items but also the knowledge and inspiration to continue carving at home. \nThroughout the day\, your tutor will also share insights into the stories\, folklore\, and ecological understanding that accompany these crafts\, helping you see the woodland through the eyes of a craftsperson. \nIt’s going to be a day of making\, learning\, and connection you’ll carry with you long after you leave the woods. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”32461″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nThis course costs £55 per person and is aimed at learners aged 16 years and over. Younger children can attend the course\, and have done in the past\, if you feel that they would enjoy it and understand that it is aimed at adults. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Get in touch if you have any questions. Please note that any participants under 18 will not be able to participate in the axe throwing activity. SUMMARY:Primitive Skills: Flint Knapping & Woodcraft
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”innerpage-rowgraphic”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nOur One Day Stone Age Skills Experience\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”inner-pagetitle”] \nWhether you’re new to bushcraft or a veteran of the outdoors\, let our experienced instructor guide you through key skills that our stone age ancestors would have relied upon; using flint-knapping to craft stone tools\, crafting stone tools\, shaping wood to create useful items such as a fish hook and harnessing the power of fire to make your own wooden bowl.  This special course is all set against the backdrop of the historically themed Park In The Past\, site of the UK’s only full-size reconstructed Roman fort. \nThis one-day course is an immersion into the skills of our ancient past which is perfect for both beginners and those who already enjoy the outdoor lifestyle but want to take their knowledge of bushcraft further. You will gain a deepened connection to nature whilst experiencing how bushcraft skills have shaped us into where we are today. You will be introduced to a range of practical skills whilst connecting with your inner hunter-gatherer. These skills can then be taken for continued practise in your own time. For those of us who are already practised in “modern day” bushcraft skills\, this course is a chance to experience a world without metal tools and familiar kit. Wherever you are on your journey into bushcraft we aim to bring your confidence and skillset forward to the next level. \nYour tutor for this special course is primitive skills expert Billy Souter; \n“Students will gain knowledge and understanding regarding some of the fundamental skills that would have been regularly used by our ancestors. The procurement and working of flint allowed the creation of incredible tools and in many examples highly detailed art. You will learn basic knapping techniques which will be used to create either a functional flint tipped drill or an arrowhead. SUMMARY:Identifying Native Trees
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”innerpage-rowgraphic”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”inner-pagetitle”]When you’re out walking\, have you ever wondered\, “which tree is that?” \nDo you know your alder from your elder? To many people our hedgerows and forests can look like a sea of green\, but if we look closer and understand the clues trees give us\, we can unlock their identity and so much more. On this one-day course\, we’ll show you how to identify trees in summer by looking at leaves\, developing seeds\, fruits\, bark and other clues. We’ll also look at the different uses that trees have\, their place in the ecosystem and dive into a bit of woodland folklore. You will also take away your very own set of field guides covering common trees in all four seasons. This handy resource is perfect for continuing your learning and practising tree ID after the course is done. You’ll learn about the restorative woodland management that is happening on site and how wildlife is returning to this special place. Your course will all be set against the beautiful backdrop of the mixed ancient woodland and parkland of the National Trust’s Chirk Castle estate with over 600 acres of nature to explore and veteran trees over 500 years old.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nGain confidence in identifying a range of common native & naturalised tree species\nRecognise differences between similar looking species\nLearn to use leaves\, fruits\, seeds\, bark and other seasonal signs\nDiscover medicinal and edible uses for trees\nUnderstand how trees grow and their value to wildlife\nReceive your bundle of Tree ID Field Guides\nGet access to a discounted place on The Complete Tree ID Course\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″] [vc_column_text] \nEvent details\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”white-text”]Date: Sat 28th June 2024 \nTime: 10:00am – 4:00pm \nVenue: Chirk Castle \nCost: £45[/vc_column_text]Book now [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”14473″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”row-graphic-white” css=”.vc_custom_1573054760131{background-image: url(https://woodlandclassroom.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/background-texture.jpg?id=12328) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”31771″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=”” el_class=”wd-circle-image”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””] \nTREE FIELD GUIDE BUNDLE INCLUDED!\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Everyone attending this course also gets a FREE field guide bundle including 4 seasonal cheat sheets; summer\, autumn\, winter and spring. From here we will take a short walk out into the woods to learn how to view the natural world through the eyes of our ancestors. \nHaving each been issued with your own knife to use for the weekend\, we will then look at the wealth of natural materials available to us and then put these materials to the test with a practical session of shelter building as your tutor guides you through the skills required to build two styles of simple but effective shelter using all natural materials from the woodland itself. \nNext we will gather around our new woodland homes to practise further safe cutting techniques with our knives which can be used for a range of practical applications. You will also be shown how to use a folding saw effectively\, avoiding the pitfalls that come with poor technique. Next it’s time to get to grips with the axe as you are introduced to a variety of types; which axe for which task\, how to split wood safely and with minimal effort and basic carving techniques. Throughout this session you will learn how to make smart decisions about which living materials we should harvest and which we should consider passing by. \nYour first afternoon will be spent focused on firelighting skills. You will gain skills using tried & tested techniques. Choose from; firesteel\, solar fire\, chemical\, electrical or traditional flint & steel to produce embers and flames of quality. Then we will be exploring the woods on the hunt for natural tinders\, kindling and firewood\, including how find them even in wet conditions. \nNext you will unlock the secrets of fire by friction by learning to use the bow drill\, an ancient form of firelighting. We guarantee you will have success using this iconic technique. Your tinder and firewood will be put to good use as you learn how to use these to build your own campfire. Finally you will be be shown how to minimise your trace and lessen your impact on the land when bushcrafting. \nOn the Saturday evening we come together as a group to prepare freshly cooked campfire meal in our traditional dutch oven. You’ll enjoy good food and good company around the campfire as humans have done for thousands of generations. Then you have the option to join us for either a natural navigation session by starlight (weather dependent) or a night-time tree ID walk\, an exercise which will really hone your senses. \nDay two will introduce further key skills as well as build on the foundations you already have. You will discover how to source\, filter and purify water from natural sources. Learn how to make water safe to drink. We will then turn our attention to making natural cordage from woodland plants and trees. Having made your cordage\, you will then be testing its strengths and applications by rigging tarp shelters with what you’ve crafted. \nYour final afternoon will aim to bring all your new skills together with a range of challenges designed to put into practise all you have learned. Using your sharp tools\, you will create campcraft devices to make outdoor life easy and you will go through the whole process of creating your own campfire using natural tinders and fire by friction to boil your own woodland brew – which\, we assure you\, will taste very satisfying indeed. \nOn the Friday and Saturday nights you can choose to sleep out in your own built woodland shelter or tree hammock and wake up in the woods. It’s going to be a weekend you won’t forget. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”14451″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”14452″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nThis course costs £190 per person and is open to adult learners aged 16 years and over. There is the option to sleep out in one of our natural shelters in the woods\, on both Friday and Saturday nights at no extra charge. Or you can bring your own hammock or tarp system to setup under the trees here. Hammocks (with covering bug net and tarp) are available to hire from us at an additional £20 for the weekend. You can read our Event Terms & Conditions here. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Primitive Skills: Fish Tanning & Net Making
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” el_class=”innerpage-rowgraphic”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=””] \nExplore Stone Age Crafts With An Expert\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”inner-pagetitle”]Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned bushcrafter\, let our skilled instructor guide you through ancient techniques that our ancestors would have relied upon to survive and thrive. This immersive course will introduce you to two incredible skills: tanning fish skin to create durable leather and the art of net making\, both of which have been integral to human ingenuity for thousands of years. Set against the inspiring backdrop of Park In The Past\, with its historically themed landscapes and reconstructed Roman fort\, this special course promises to deepen your connection to the natural world. \nThis one-day experience is perfect for those curious about primitive skills and for outdoor enthusiasts looking to expand their bushcraft toolkit. You’ll gain hands-on experience in transforming natural materials into functional items while developing skills that can be further practised at home. You will also have the option to craft your tanned fish leather into a small pouch. Whether you want to connect with your ancestral roots or learn practical techniques for crafting useful tools\, this course offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore how our forebears made use of their environment with skill and resourcefulness. \nYour tutor for this course is primitive skills expert Billy Souter: \n“Primitive skills like tanning and net making bring us closer to the land and its resources. By working with our hands\, we rediscover how raw materials can be transformed into functional tools and items. Tanning fish skins into leather or creating nets from simple fibres offers a glimpse into the creativity and resilience of our ancestors. These skills allow us to engage with the past while crafting something beautiful and useful for the present.”[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nFish Tanning: Discover how to turn salmon skin into beautiful and durable leather. You’ll learn to descale\, flesh\, and soften the skins\, gaining an understanding of tanning techniques that can be applied to other hides. Here\, Billy will introduce you to the resourcefulness of our ancestors\, exploring how they worked with natural materials to create tools and items essential for survival\, such as tanned fish leather and handmade nets. \nThe morning will focus on the fascinating craft of fish tanning. You will begin by working with fresh salmon skins\, learning how to carefully descale and flesh them to prepare for tanning. Billy will guide you through the traditional techniques used to transform raw fish skins into durable and beautiful leather\, perfect for a variety of practical and decorative purposes. You will gain an understanding of the tanning process\, from preparation to softening\, and by lunchtime\, you’ll be well on your way to creating a piece of fish leather to take home. \nMeanwhile we will be getting our traditional hot smoker up to temperature to cook up some tasty fish using this traditional method and a fish fillet will be cooked over the fire using a split-stick frame of hazel\, with no need for pots and pans. \nIn the afternoon\, you will turn your attention to net making. Billy will introduce you to the needle and gauge technique for crafting strong and versatile nets. Through hands-on practice\, you will learn how to create rectangular netting\, honing each step of the process until the rhythm becomes second nature. These skills can be used to produce nets for fishing\, trapping\, net bags and even shelter\, demonstrating the incredible versatility of this ancient craft. \nThroughout the day\, Billy will share his passion for primitive skills and showcase examples of his own handcrafted items to inspire you\, from natural cordage to tanned hides and handmade tools. His knowledge and enthusiasm will provide a deeper understanding of how our ancestors thrived using the natural resources around them. \nBy the end of the day\, you will leave with a piece of your own fish leather and the foundation for crafting traditional nets—skills that you can continue to develop at home. This immersive experience offers a unique opportunity to connect with ancient crafts\, rediscover the value of working with your hands\, and gain a deeper appreciation for the natural world. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”32091″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”book-now”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nBook now\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nThis course costs £75 per person and is open to adult learners aged 16 years and over.
