wild food & foraging course in north wales

Autumn in the woods is the perfect time for foraging wild foods. Join our expert guest tutor, Dave Watson from Woodland Survival Crafts as we explore the world of edible plants, fungi and wild game. “Food tastes better outdoors” is a common phrase but it tastes even better when you have gathered and prepared it yourself.

The secret world of edible wild plants will be opened up to you as we search for mushrooms, roots, berries & nuts at this plentiful time of year. To the forager, our woodlands and hedgerows are full of tasty and filling wild food opportunities.

This one day course looks at some of the best and tastiest ways to enjoy wild food. From our basecamp set in the ancient woodland at the National Trust’s Chirk Castle estate we will be exploring the forest and hedges in search of “food for free.”

  • Gain confidence in identifying a variety of edible plants & fungi
  • Learn how to prepare fish and game
  • Understand the four main cooking areas of the campfire
  • Create sustaining meals using wild ingredients
  • Confidently identify, prepare and consume a wide variety of wild foods
  • See a demonstration of baking bread in a dutch oven
  • Learn how to forage with a sustainable approach to the habitat
  • Enjoy a range of wild foods freshly prepared by you and the tutors at basecamp

Your Tutors: Dave Watson & James Kendall

Dave Watson has over 30 years of bushcraft experience. He is the lead tutor at Woodland Survival Crafts. The business was established in 1995 following a 10 year career in outdoor activity centres.

Dave’s passion for ancient survival skills, or ‘bushcraft’ as it has become known, stems from his teenage years when he spent much of his time wandering around Britain in semi-wild places trying to live off the land.

Dave views the subject of bushcraft as an exciting and inspiring tool suitable for everyone, to teach life skills, environmental education, and history as well as being a perfect basis in which to impart sound spiritual lessons.

James Kendall is the Head Bushcraft Instructor at Woodland Classroom, having worked in environmental education & conservation for over 10 years. James’ approach to teaching  steers his students toward fostering a deeper connection with nature through understanding the landscape around us; “Bushcraft skills are an effective way to do this as we learn how to make use of natural materials and live lightly with the land, whilst also connecting with our own ancient past by seeing the land through the eyes of our ancestors.”
