August 22, 2017 @ 11:30 am - 2:30 pm

£3 – £10
home education group outdoors bushcraft in north wales

Join us for a special taster session of our forthcoming outdoor Home Ed Group in Wrexham. A chance for children and parents to get a taste of what we will be offering once the term starts in September. Bushcraft skills, environmental education, nature awareness, and all children come HALF PRICE!

There are two tiers of learning group that we will be offering during our regular sessions and this taster day will give children and parents a chance to try out both. We hope this will appeal both to parents who want a forest school approach with a child-led session and those who want structured, formal outdoor learning for their kids from experienced teachers.

Group 1: PATHFINDERS –  A structured outdoor learning session for children aged 8 upwards. Led by Forest School Leader and bushcraft instructor James Kendall.

Group 2: FOREST SCHOOL HOME ED – Forest school style child-led activities and play, based around the campfire circle and Outdoor Centre grounds. Open to children of all ages and accompanying adults. Led by experienced Outdoor Activity Leader Lea Wakeman.

To find out more about the tutors running this session, check out our About Us page.

Places on our Pathfinders programme are usually £20 per session, but we’re offering children chance to try it out at this event for just £10.

Children attending our Forest School Home Ed Group will also be able to come for half price, bringing the usual £6 ticket down to just £3 for this taster session.

To get tickets, just scroll to the bottom of this page.

We run both groups during the same 3 hour session. Our Forest School Home Ed Group will be mainly based around the campfire circle and surrounding grounds, whilst our Pathfinders will head off for 2 sessions of structured outdoor learning with an experienced tutor.

Parents & Guardians can join children on the Pathfinders learning session or relax at the campfire circle, taking the chance to socialise with other families from the home educating community.

Both groups will come together for a shared lunch around the campfire circle.

Tea, coffee, biscuits and child-friendly drinks will be available at the forest school campfire.

Vegetables and other ingredients will be provided for the cooking of a communal lunch. We will work with the children and adults in the Forest School group to prepare this.

There will be a Woodland Classroom leader with each group at all times and parents would be able to assist as required.

Felin Puleston Outdoor Education Centre has proper toilets and we have use of the activity rooms and kitchen for learning and cooking in poor weather if required. A bit of rain won’t stop play though.

An exciting and engaging learning environment which draws on our huge range of skills, qualifications and experience in outdoor education. We’ve been inspired by the teachings of Joseph Cornell and Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature and we want to bring the outdoors alive in ways that will inspire and educate the children.

Session subjects will include: bushcraft skills, ecology, environmental education, tree identification, traditional crafts, greenwood working, living history, circus skills, philosophy for kids, all with an emphasis on both the social and emotional aspects of learning in groups and also promoting a mentoring and buddying system within the class so that older children are supporting younger learners. We’d make great use of the Erddig estate on our doorstep as a fantastic venue to learn outdoors.

Those parents who joined us on the Pathfinders group to help supervise the children would also have the added benefit of learning new skills, which they could follow on with during their own home ed time.

Based around the campfire circle at the Outdoor Centre and making use of the immediate outdoor space for play and guided activities.

“Forest School is an inspirational process, that offers ALL learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees. Forest School is a specialised learning approach that sits within and compliments the wider context of outdoor and woodland education.” Forest School Association

Sessions are a time for child-led play and they can dip in and out of the activities when they choose. Guided activities can include whittling, basic fire lighting, den building, games like capture the flag and basic campfire cooking i.e. popcorn, nettle crisps, toasted marshmallows etc.
